Women's Health Check

Breast and cervical cancer are often curable when they're caught early. That's why women should schedule annual mammograms and Pap smears. But many people have no health insurance or health insurance that doesn't cover mammograms or health insurance with a high deductible that precludes annual tests.

The federally-funded Women's Health Check program is available through the Panhandle Health District. Women's Health Check provides clinical breast exams, mammograms and Pap smears to women:

  • ages 50 to 64 with
  • limited income and
  • no health insurance,
  • health insurance with a prohibitively high deductible OR
  • health insurance that doesn't include mammograms or Pap smears.

Women's Health Check also extends breast cancer screening services to eligible women ages 30-49 after exams AND a health care professional confirms a suspicion of cancer.

Here's how it works:

  • Call PHD to schedule a visit.
  • Your appointment will include
    • a pelvic exam
    • Pap smear
    • Clinical (manual) breast exam
    • a test for blood in the stool
    • a voucher for a mammogram.
  • If results are abnormal, a nurse will call you and may recommend a breast ultrasound or an appointment with a surgeon or gynecologist.
  • PHD will FAX a voucher to the surgeon or the radiology center to cover the associated medical costs.
