Pap Smears
The Pap test, commonly called the Pap smear, checks for changes in the cells of the cervix in the lower part of the uterus. Pap tests show infections, abnormal cervical cells or cervical cancer. Pap tests can save lives. Cervical cancer caught early is often curable. Pap tests also find infections and abnormal cervical cells that can develop into cancer cells. Treatment often prevents cervical cancer. Doctors credit regular pap tests with a major reduction in the number of cervical cancer cases and deaths.
Pap tests belong in every woman's routine health care. Frequency of the tests depends on age and health, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend starting at age 21 or within three years of the first sexual experience. The CDC also recommends continuing regular pap tests after menopause.
