Immunization facts:
- Vaccines protect you and others.
- Adults who have the Tdap vaccine don't spread pertussis to infants, who are particularly vulnerable to whooping cough. Pertussis can cause seizures, pneumonia and brain malfunctions in infants. Because whooping cough is most contagious before coughing starts, adults can spread it without knowing. Tdap is the best protection.
- Lower vaccination rates in the United States and easy worldwide travel have raised the number of U.S. measles cases. Measles were declared gone in the United States in 2000 thanks to the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) immunization. Still, the rest of the world reports 20 million cases each year.
-
Immunizations against Hepatitis A and B protect adults from food-borne and blood-borne diseases that can damage the liver. Hepatitis A is a virus that spreads through food and feces. It’s been found in produce from other parts of the world. The Hepatitis B vaccine protects people who come in contact with infected blood.
- The varicella vaccine offers protection from the chicken pox virus. Women who haven’t had chicken pox and plan to get pregnant should talk to their health care providers about the varicella vaccine.
- Zostavax is a fairly new vaccine that protects against Shingles, a painful skin rash caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. It's approved for the 60 and older age group. Shingles is the resurrection of the chicken pox virus.
- HPV is the vaccine for women younger than 27 that protects against the virus that can cause cervical cancer.
- Cost of adult immunizations at PHD range from $20 to $180. PHD doesn't bill insurance.
