Facts about the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
- There are about 55,000 new cases of HIV in the United States each year.
- HIV is in the blood, semen, breast milk and vaginal fluids. HIV can be passed from one infected person to another during vaginal or anal sex.
- HIV can be transmitted by sharing a needle used by an infected person.
- Transmission can occur during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding.
- A person can have HIV for many years before developing symptoms or other serious complications.
- HIV is not curable. Medication to treat symptoms and slow the progression of HIV disease can be offered.
- Testing is the only way to know for sure if you are infected with HIV.
- The best prevention is a long-term monogamous sexual relationship with a tested partner.
- At the end of 2007, Idaho had 1,497 residents living with HIV. Of those, 184 lived in the five northern counties.
How does PHD test for HIV?
PHD offers Rapid HIV testing that provides results in as little as 15 minutes. The test uses a drop of blood from the patient's finger. Tests cost $35 to $55, depending on income. PHD helps patients with positive results inform their partners.
All test results are confidential. Clients who test positive are tested a second time to confirm the results. PHD refers HIV-positive clients to the North Idaho AIDS Coalition for the full specturm of support services.
