Komen Race Funds Local Breast Cancer Fight

Hayden – Susan G. Komen for the Cure® enabled Panhandle Health District (PHD) to pay for 530 mammograms, 105 breast ultrasounds and 20 surgical consults and/or procedures during the 2009-2010 grant year.

Of the 501 women screened during that grant year, six were diagnosed with breast cancer and received treatment.

The Race for the Cure in Coeur d’Alene is the primary fund-raiser for the fight against breast cancer in this area. The Coeur d’Alene Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® grants to Idaho’s fight against breast cancer 75 percent of the net proceeds it raises. The remaining 25 percent goes to the national Komen program to fund research.

This year’s Race for the Cure in Coeur d’Alene is Sunday, Sept. 26. The run starts and ends at North Idaho College.

PHD has received Komen funding for 11 years. With the funding, PHD provides breast screening exams primarily to women and men younger than 50 with limited incomes and no medical insurance or only catastrophic health insurance.

During the 2009-2010 grant year, PHD with Komen funds screened:
