Who Are Senior Companions?

Senior Companions are healthy older adults who help other adults live independently. They support family caregivers, assist with such jobs as grocery shopping and offer companionship.

Without the help of Senior Companions, many older adults would not be able to continue living at home and would need more expensive and less personal care.

 

Who is Eligible to be a Senior Companion?

Senior Companions:

  • Are older than 60
  • Have a limited income
  • Have time to volunteer 20 hours each week
  • Love to help their neighbors

 

Benefits for Senior Companions

  • Training before service
  • On-going training
  • An annual physical exam
  • Supplemental insurance
  • Help with meal and transportation costs
  • A small stipend for those who qualify
  • The joy of helping others live on their own

Senior Companions accomplishments:

In 2008, 81 Senior Companions in Idaho's five northern counties:

  • Gave 64,064 hours of service.
  • Traveled 144,321 miles.
  • Helped 347 clients stay in their homes.
  • Provided valuable respite for 89 caregivers.
