Tobacco Cessation Program

Tobacco use is the most preventable cause of death in the United States according to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention. Tobacco related deaths are responsible for one in every five deaths in the United States.


 

The Panhandle Health District of Idaho is working toward a common goal to facilitate smoking cessation activities for the citizens of Idaho. The target population/groups selected by the Idaho Legislature are: pregnant women, youth, and the general public.


Implementation Plan:

  • Determine the appropriate way to reach the target population.
  • Utilize the "Five A" approach to smoking cessation and identify approved smoking cessation programs.
  • Assess and assure adequate geographic coverage of cessation programs.
  • An outreach/marketing plan to reach the target populations has been developed.

Program Parameters:

 

The smoking cessation program contains the following components:

  • Nicotine addiction and habit.
  • Consequences of smoking.
  • Different quitting techniques.
  • Benefits of being smoke/tobacco free.
  • Withdrawal symptoms.
  • Coping strategies.
  • Stress management.
  • Nutrition and exercise.
  • Social supports.
  • Relapse prevention.
