August 29, 2005 Fit and Fall Proof Class Helps Seniors Stay on their Feet New classes starting in September
|
Take valuable information that seniors can use to stay healthy, mix in a little fun, and you have the makings for the popular Fit and Fall Proof classes, free senior physical activity instruction aimed at increasing muscle strength and balance to prevent falls in adults. The free Fit and Fall Proof classes will start again in September and new students are welcome. The classes are held twice a week for six weeks and are approximately 45 minutes in length. Trained leaders follow a standardized curriculum and are monitored by Panhandle Health District Health Promotion staff. Class members participate at their own level of comfort, whether it is sitting in a chair, using a chair for support, or progressing to the point of no support. Classes are designed for older adults who want to improve their health and reduce the risk of falling. According to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, falls are the leading cause of injury death for individuals aged 65 and older. Idaho's death rate from falls is almost twice the national rate. To register for a free Fit and Fall Proof class offered in Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls, Athol, Sandpoint, Kellogg, Hayden, Bonners Ferry or Plummer, contact Pam Cartwright, Panhandle Health District at 208-415-5144. |
