Seasonal flu is picking up in North Idaho

Seasonal flu has reached Idaho’s five northern counties and is picking up steam as February progresses. Priest Lake Elementary closed Friday because 19 of 56 students and two of three teachers are ill with respiratory flu-like symptoms. Flu is not a reportable disease in Idaho so no accurate number of cases is available. However, lab tests confirmed three cases in late December in the Panhandle, six in early January and 15 at the start of this month. The virus is contagious and spreads through the air and direct contact.

Panhandle Health District recommends people protect themselves with flu shots and good hygiene and safeguard others by covering their coughs and sneezes. Flu vaccine for all ages still is available at Panhandle Health District offices. Protection now will last the entire flu season, which typically ends in late spring. Flu shots cost $22. Medicare and Medicaid are accepted. Call your local office for an appointment:

  • Benewah County – 245-4556
  • Bonner County – 263-5159
  • Boundary County – 267-5558
  • Kootenai County – 415-5100
  • Shoshone County – 786-7474

Flu symptoms include fever, sore throat, muscle aches, malaise and a dry cough. People are contagious a day before symptoms appear and remain contagious for about five days. The brunt of the flu lasts two to seven days, but lingering effects may continue for another two weeks.

Panhandle Health District nurses advise people with the flu to stay home, rest and drink plenty of liquids. Pneumonia is a common complication of flu, so proper care is particularly important.
